Make this a sexy and sensual space. Everything needs to be black – the walls, ceilings, lights, aluminium, and even the toilets.

With huge glass walls separating the restaurant from the bar, this is one place you can feel comfortable having drinks with friends and getting rowdy. Diners on the other side are unaffected by the volumes from beyond.

A tired, old bar was in desperate need of a redevelopment, and the owners wanted to make it a sexy and sensual space. They wanted everything to be black – the walls, ceilings, lights, aluminium, and even the toilets.

We used local, recycled timber materials. Other than adding our black on black treatments, everything was intentionally left imperfect for a raw and attractive feel that encourages closer inspection.

The recycled timber continues in the exterior courtyard, creating timber boxes to define a fairy light exterior dining space – all purposely demountable to meet council requirements.

Recycled timber slabs are suspended from the ceiling to form a platform for the revised interior dining lighting, which sees bulbs hung over and around the guests.
